Da U.P. eh!

I’ve written three pages of stories from my travels in the upper peninsula. Instead of pasting it all here, I’ll just give you the highlights.

While on a long ride on my road bike (skinny tires), I got a flat. No problem since I had a spare tube, but only one. Half a mile later I got another flat. Now I had a problem, since I was still 8 miles from my camper. I had a small roll of duct tape and made an attempt to patch one of the two bad tubes.

Initially, it worked. I made it about two miles before it was flat again. But I never had that kind of success again. Countless times I re-inflated the tire, twice I tried to re-patch it. Twice in the last mile I re-inflated it, and still pedaled in to the campground on a flat tire.

I stopped to visit my friends Jeff and Kate. Jeff got to ride my bike while I got mauled by his dogs, George and Cajun.

If it’s August and you’re wearing a jacket, this must be Lake Superior.

It was so nice I changed bikes and rode it again!

While camping in the National Forest all by myself (campsite pictured below), I dreamt I was helping a nurse tend to a woman that was screaming in pain. “Is that normal?” I asked referring to the screems, and I woke up. It was 3:30 AM, and I thought to myself, “what a strange dream.” Then I heard the screem again. And again. For about 4 minutes. The last time I heard it, the source was definitely moving away. A few minutes later I fell back to sleep. This is pretty close to what I heard. In the dark. Cut and paste this link to a new window to hear the sound.

Say yah to da U.P. eh!

Not a lot of time for details, but I’ve been camping in Michigan’s upper peninsula. It’s been nice and quiet, finally a chance to get the KTM out of the van. It’s been parked in there since May!

I’ll have more details later, but here’s a couple of pictures from a mountain bike ride. I rode 32 miles of trail followed by 20 miles of sandy/dirt roads. It was hot, and I had about 45 miles worth of water with me. What an adventure!

I spent a weekend working at the races, this time in Elk Grove, Illinois. We had a good race, despite not winning. Here’s a couple pictures from the racing.

Then I was back to Grand Rapids for a few more days of nanny/babysitter/home health care aide/gardener/cook/cat wrangler. Catrina's recovery has been quick though, perhaps due to the high quality of care she's gotten, perhaps motivated to get rid of a persistent house guest? Only she knows for sure. Either way, I've enjoyed being here and being helpful.

Still working on learning to aim the camera for those self portraits.

Steak with peppers. Yum! I wish I could take credit for cooking this but the credit belongs to Jeff. 2nd place in the Wii golf championship! Yeah Jeff!

So I’m back on the road. I stopped to visit my friend Ivan but a sudden illness caused that visit to get rescheduled. I ended up in Hart, Michigan, at a nice little city run campground. Finally back in my own bed!

So, for those who are following along on a map, I'll be continuing north, heading into upper Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. I had contemplated a tour of the north shore of Lake Huron (Canadian side), to compliment last year's tour of the north side of Lake Superior, but let's just say the motivation did not materialize.

This week's musical selection is from Wreckless Eric.

I will now resume my regularly scheduled low-earth orbit.
